How LEGO Became My Pain Management Superhero
Hey there, fellow warriors! Let’s talk about something a little different today—chronic pain and fatigue. I know, I know, it sounds like the world’s worst combination of a bad rom-com and a horror movie. But hang tight because I promise there’s a twist (and maybe some LEGO magic) waiting for us at the end!
So, picture this: it's a typical day in my life, which means I’m battling my body like it’s the final boss in a video game. Chronic pain and fatigue are like that clingy friend who never takes a hint. You try to shake them off, but they just keep hanging around, making every day a little more challenging. Some days, I feel like a walking bag of potatoes (and not the cute, Instagram-worthy kind).
But here’s where the plot thickens: I have found my secret weapon—LEGO. Yes, you heard me right! Those colourful little bricks that most of us played with as kids are now my adult therapy tool. Let me break it down for you.
1. Building Blocks of Happiness
When I’m in the throes of pain, the last thing I want is to drag myself out of bed and do anything. But then I remembered my LEGO stash, and suddenly, my motivation levels spiked higher than those of a cat on catnip. There’s something undeniably therapeutic about sifting through those bricks, letting my fingers run over their smooth surfaces. It’s like a mini meditation session! And the best part? You can build whatever your heart desires! A majestic castle? Done. A spaceship to escape this planet? Also done. It’s like LEGO is the therapist I never knew I needed.
2. Low-Stakes Creativity
Let’s face it, chronic pain can make you feel like you’ve lost control over your life. But with LEGO, every piece you snap together is a little victory. It doesn’t matter if I’m building a complex model or just stacking bricks in a wobbly tower; I’m still creating something. And in a world where my body often feels like it’s plotting against me, creating something (even if it’s a half-baked interpretation of the Eiffel Tower) gives me a sense of accomplishment. Plus, if I mess up? I just tear it down and start over. Talk about a win-win!
3. A Community of Fellow Builders
Did you know there’s a whole world of adult LEGO enthusiasts out there? Yeah, it’s a thing! Joining online groups and forums has connected me with some amazing people who understand the joys and struggles of chronic pain and fatigue. We share tips, tricks, and even our most spectacular (and hilarious) builds. I’ve seen everything from LEGO therapy to virtual build parties. Who knew that bonding over bricks could be so fulfilling? If I can’t physically hang out with friends, I can at least build a mini version of them in LEGO. (Shoutout to my bestie, who now has a LEGO doppelgänger sporting a crown and sunglasses!)
4. Creative Escapes and Mini Adventures
Let’s talk about escapism. Sometimes, when pain and fatigue are at their peak, I just want to escape to a world where I can be anything—like a brave knight or a spaceship captain. I can create scenarios with LEGO that whisk me away from the daily grind. I can envision epic battles, treasure hunts, or intergalactic adventures without leaving my couch. Plus, there’s no waiting in lines or getting stuck in traffic. I only have to worry about finding that elusive one-by-one brick in a sea of colour.
5. Making Memories
Building with LEGO isn’t just about the bricks; it’s about the memories I create with my family and friends. Whether I’m challenging my husband to a build-off or convincing my husband to join me in making a LEGO day trip to buy a out of print set 4 hours away, we’re laughing and bonding. And honestly, if you can make a pain day even slightly less painful with laughter and creativity, you’re winning at life!
